Bantwal: Regarding the reservation for the president and vice president posts of the municipal council, the government had issued a letter stating its decision on September 3, which has changed in a subsequent communique issued on September 6, leading to astonishment.

The change in policy regarding electing 15 presidents and 4 vice presidents of the municipal council, has raked up a controversy pertaining to the Urban Development Department. The reservations are applicable for the election for the president of Karkala, Kundapura, and Bantwal municipal councils.

In the letter dated September 3, the government has stated that a general category woman will be elected as the president for three of these municipal councils. For the vice president (on caste basis) elections, it was decided as follows: Bantwal-OBC (A), Kundapura-ST and Karkala-General Category.

The second letter from the government on the same has become the talk of the town. The commoners and the opposition party are alleging that there is a political agenda behind it. This has led to anguish in the BJP.

According to the changes made, it is ST in Bantwal, Woman candidate of OBC (B) in Kundapura, Woman candidate of ST in Karkala.

Only in Congress:
As per the September 3 notification, there were strong predictions of the BJP bagging the Bantwal corporation but as per the subsequent one, it is Janardhan Chanthimaaru from Congress, who is the only eligible candidate, according to the amended reservation policy. It is said to be an effortless victory. However, there are no changes in the vice president reservation.

In the previous 5 year term, the first half was given to a woman from ST, during which term Vasanthi Chandappa was the president. Currently, from the same caste is Chanthimaaru.

Nobody can deny the fact that there are high chances of people questioning the move on the reservation in the court. If this happens, then there is definitely going to be a delay in the electoral process for the president and vice president posts for the three municipal councils.
