Moodabidri: An abandoned female infant was found under a bridge at Kairdabeddu on Kallamundkur-Puthige border area on Thursday morning.
Santhosh Bhat, a local resident who was out for his morning walk found the baby after his pet dog dragged him off road and took him under the bridge. The abandoned baby girl’s face was infested with ants. Instantly Bhat called upon the residents living near the bridge.
Though a huge crowd gathered to have a look at the baby, none came forward to lift the baby whose umbilical chord was still hanging from her stomach.
Finally GP Member Sathish Kallamundkuru took the baby, cleaned her up, fed her some food and then handed her over to Moodabidri police.
The baby was then sent to Puthige Community Health Centre.
Even as locals speculated that an unwed mother must have abandoned her child or some woman must have left the baby because it is a girl, there was a beeline outside the CHC.
Large number of childless couples from various places thronged the CHC and urged the Woman and Child Welfare officers to hand over the child to them so that they could adopt the beautiful little baby.
However, the officials turned down all the requests and asked the couples to approach the legal way to get custody of the child.
The doctors suspect that the baby must be only five days old.
The baby has been now handed over to an adoption centre in Puttur.
Meanwhile, the locals were irked by the lackadaisical attitude of the police who came to the spot at 10.30 am to collect the details and then returned to take the baby back only at 1 pm.
