Mangaluru: The Indian Coast Guard, on Wednesday, January 29, commissioned a high-speed interceptor boat in Mangaluru.
With this interceptor boat, coastal security has received a fillip. The boat will be based in Mangaluru and will be under the administrative and operational control of the Commander of the Coast Guard Region (West).
Chief Secretary T M Vijay Bhaskar commissioned the Indian Coast Interceptor Boat C-448 at New Mangalore Port in the presence of Commander, Coast Guard Region (West) Inspector General A P Badola. The Interceptor Boat will be based at Mangaluru. Vijay Bhaskar, said that the crew should discharge their duties faithfully and with courage.
Coast Guard DIG S S Dasila, informed that the ship will be deployed for patrolling and rescue operations. “This water jet-propelled vessel has an endurance of 500 nautical miles at 20 knots and is capable of touching speeds of up to 45 knots. The quick reaction capability of the boat, coupled with modern equipment and systems, provides it with the capability to respond to any maritime situation,” he said.
The boat is fitted with state-of-the-art navigation and communication equipment designed for the high-speed interception, close-coast patrol, low-intensity maritime operations, search and rescue and maritime surveillance. It is capable of operating in shallow waters and deep seas. It is also equipped with infrared systems for night surveillance. The boat – C 448 – has a crew of 12 personnel and is commanded by Assistant Commandant Apoorva Sharma.
