Mangaluru: At an interaction session between the members of Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) and police personnel led by the Commissioner of Police, various issues on traffic and law & order were discussed. The interaction programme was held at the KCCI office in Bunder on Tuesday, October 25.

Several issues related to flouting traffic rules, traffic congestion, rash driving and police efficiency were touched upon in the interaction by Commissioner of Police, Chandra Sekhar. He said that there are many changes which can be brought in Mangaluru traffic control to maintain a healthy traffic system.

He went on to say that though there are rules o be followed, several citizens flout these rules which will lead to chaos in the city. “Motorists and pedestrians alike, must be educated about the traffic rules and only the general public themselves can help in maintaining order in the system. Judging police and accusing them of inefficiency can not be used as a ticket to escape their ignorance”, he said while clearing the doubt on traffic police that a few motorists have.

Making his stand on police involvement in urban planning, he mentioned about the responsibility of maintaining traffic which has to be distributed among city and road planners as well. “The police department must be informed on city planning so that ideas from their point of view can be shot out to the engineers to smoothen traffic flow and manage road safety”, he added.

Speaking about the flyovers at certain places creating traffic congestion he said, “Both the Kuloor and Surathkal flyovers have been built in an unscientific manner. The carriage ways adjacent to the flyovers are very narrow at these places and leads to a lot of blocks in traffic flow.” On the same grounds, he added that it is important to involve the police for effective infrastructure planning.

A memorandum was submitted by KCCI President Jeevan Saldana to Chandra Sekhar at the event to look into the various matters regarding adherence to traffic rules, plotting more parking areas, identifying bottlenecks and areas of congestion by the police and bring in a change for betterment of the city.

KCCI Vice President Vathika Pai, KCCI Treasurer Ganesh Bhat, Secretaries Abdul Hameed and Praveen Kumar were also present at the occasion.
