In Dakshina Kannada, dog owners have expressed growing concerns regarding a recent surge in cases of canine distemper, a viral disease that affects the nervous system of dogs. Dr. Arun Kumar Shetty, the deputy director of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, highlighted the severity of the disease, noting its impact on the nervous, respiratory, and gastrointestinal systems of affected dogs.

Extent of the Problem

Veterinary hospitals across the district have reported a total of 1,619 instances of canine distemper between January and March. The disease has been particularly devastating for street dogs, with many succumbing to its effects. Dr. Shetty explained that approximately 50% of infected dogs die from the disease, while others continue to exhibit symptoms even after recovery, such as stumbling.

Spread and Containment

The spread of canine distemper has been observed in various pockets of the district, with recent increases attributed to its contagious nature. The virus spreads through contact with bodily fluids such as saliva, blood, urine, or respiratory droplets. Immunization is identified as the primary solution to safeguard animals, but the vaccine is currently unavailable in government veterinary hospitals. Additionally, immunizing stray dogs poses logistical challenges.

Regional Statistics

Official statistics reveal a higher concentration of cases in Sullia, Bantwal, and Mangaluru taluks. In January, the district reported 433 cases, followed by 582 in February, and 604 in March. Sullia taluk accounted for 378 out of the total 1,619 cases, while Ullal reported only 17 cases.

The surge in canine distemper cases underscores the urgent need for preventive measures and access to vaccination to mitigate the impact of the disease on the canine population in Dakshina Kannada.
