Mangaluru: With the aim to Diwali a festival for all, the Congress will be organising various events as part of Diwali celebration in the city.
Addressing a news conference on Sunday, MLC Ivan D’Souza said that three competitions- elocution, painting competition and ‘Goodudeepa’ competition etc will be held for school and college students on October 29 in Kadri Majunatheshwara temple premises. The competitions will be held simultaneously at the temple premises from 3 pm onwards.
“Our festivals will have more meaning only if they are celebrated by all irrespective of religion. Recently Bakrid was celebrated on similar lines and now it is time celebrate Deepavali, the festival of lights as a public event,” he said
As a part of the social welfare initiative, spectacles and rice will be distributed to the beneficiaries of the local area. A 50 member team has been made to take care of the organizing and distribution programme to be held as part of this event, he said adding that over one thousand beneficiaries will be given rice on the occasion by District In-charge Minsiter Ramanath Rai. Four hundred beneficiaries from the medical camp conducted recently will be given spectacles by local Congress leader Nagendra Kumar.
