Coronavirus scare: Man who escaped from Wenlock Hospital found, brought back

Mangaluru: The man who escaped from the Wenlock Hospital, after he was placed in quarantine for showing symptoms of a covid-19 infection, was traced by and brought back by the district health officials.

It can be recalled that a man, who arrived in Mangaluru from Dubai, was placed in the isolation ward at the Wenlock Hospital, from where he escaped on Monday, March 9 morning.

Sources from the district health department informed that the person who escaped from the Wenlock Hospital is a resident of Thalapady. Initially, health officials visited Thalapady and tried to convince him to come to the hospital. But, his family members reportedly fought with the officials and stopped them from taking him to the Wenlock Hospital. Following this, District Health Officer (DHO) Dr Sikandar Pasha lodged a complaint at Mangaluru North Police Station in this regard.

Later, health officials were tipped-off about his presence in Vittal, Bantwal. With the help of the Bantwal Health officials, he was traced and brought back to the Wenlock Hospital on Monday evening. DHO Dr Pasha, when contacted, confirmed that the man was brought back to the hospital and that the necessary treatment is being given to him at the hospital.

DC convenes emergency meeting

As a precautionary measure, Dakshina Kannada district Deputy Commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh convened an emergency meeting at the Wenlock Hospital on Monday evening and asked the officials to take all precautionary measures to tackle the situation. Health and Family Welfare Department divisional assistant director (Mysuru) Dr Pushpalatha, Director Dr Prasad, Wenlock Hospital superintendent Dr Rajeshwar Devi and others were present at the meeting.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh has asked the people not to panic as no one has tested positive for covid-19 in the Dakshina Kannada district so far.
