Mangaluru: The Kudroli Gokarnanatheshwara Temple has disbursed a total of 150 quintals of rice to the poor and daily wagers in the Dakshina Kannada district amidst the COVID-19 lockdown.
This service was carried out under the direction of former union minister B Janardhana Poojary. Initially, the temple had planned to distribute only 100 quintals of rice to the poor and daily wagers. However, the quantity was increased to 150 quintals after there was an increase in demand. As the temple does not come under the Muzrai department of the state government, the temple spends its own money for this purpose.
Temple treasurer Padmaraj R informed that the rice is being distributed through grocery shops in the area, where the poor and daily wagers are more in number. “As the lockdown is still in force, we are disbursing rice through the grocery shops. Some donors have also extended their cooperation for this social service,” he added.
Free lunch for migrant labourers
The temple is also providing free lunch to over 700 migrant labourers on a daily basis between 11.30 am and 3 pm. This is being done in areas like Bajpe, Porkodi, Malali, Mannagudda, Urwa Store, Kuloor, Guddeyangadi, Panjimogaru, Kavoor and Baikampady.
