Customs seized gold worth Rs 64 Lakhs in November

Mangaluru: The sleuths from Customs Department have seized over Rs. 64 Lakh worth of gold in six instances of smuggling reported at the Mangalore International Airport here on November 2017.

As per the press release, there have been six separate instances of gold smuggling through various modus operandi.

In the first case, 803 grams of gold powder was mixed with a chemical to form a gum and filled into the hollows of the sandals worn by a passenger. In the second case, a passenger had hidden four gold biscuits weighing 466.4 grams in total, under his feet, which were covered with foot bands with socks. In the third case, on the same day, another passenger was intercepted with 3 pieces of gold biscuits weighing a total of 184.29 grams which were found in the inner pocket of his trousers. In the fourth case, a passenger had concealed 4 gold biscuits weighing a total of 466.5 grams in his rectum.

In two other cases, two passengers had concealed gold weighing a total of 221 grams in silver painted bracelets.

In the month of November, the total weight of gold seized is 2.141 Kgs, valued at Rs 64.38 Lakh.

Among the 6 passengers caught for smuggling gold, 3 hailed from Kasargod, 2 from Bhatkal and 1 from South Kanara and all had arrived from Dubai. One passenger has been arrested and investigation is in progress in all the cases.
