Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada district Deputy Commissioner Rajendra has agreed to utilise the night shelter in Bunder as a home for the destitute and to coordinate with the NGOs to provide them with food.
The development comes after a meeting with Jerardin D’Souza, Founder of Mangalore Alzheimer’s Association-MAA and Managing Trustee of Spandhana We Care Charitable Trust, who raised concerns about the welfare of the destitute, especially of those around Nehru Maidan. He presented a letter to the DC requesting him to call for a meeting with the concerned officials to find a solution to the issue.
Subsequently, the DC enquired with each organisation about their needs and their capacity to house the needy.
Later, Jerardin D’Souza suggested that he night shelter in Bunder, which has the capacity to hold 75 people, could be used to house the destitute. After officer at the Mangaluru City Corporation Chittaranjan provided the details of the same, the DC agreed to the same and instructed the officials to make use of the night shelter for the poor.
Considering the current COVID pandemic, the DC promised to write to the authorities regarding funds and medicines and made prompt instructions.
Representatives of around 31 organizations were present at the meeting.
