Dakshina Kannada gets Swachhata Darpan award for cleanliness

Mangaluru: The Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat has been selected for the “Swachhata Darpan” award given by the union government of India for cleanliness, said ZP CEO Dr. M R Ravi.

Addressing a press meet here on September 27, the CEO said ” Among the 46 Zilla Panchayath have secured first rank under ‘Swachhata Darpan’ concept in the country, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi are from Karnataka state.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will present this award on October 2 in Delhi.

He also said that as per the survey conducted by the ZP recently, 3230 households without toilets will get them by October 15.

In 2016, Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayath was declared as open defecation free district. As per the baseline survey which had been carried out from 2012 to 2016, it was declared that Dakshina Kannada is a defecation free district after gathering information of 2,89,746 families, which has also been recorded in Panchathantra, he added.

Later in 2017, from August 16 to September 20 in a social economic survey conducted, it was found that in 230 gram panchayats, 366 villages were open defecation free. Among the total of 3,00,695 houses surveyed, it was reported that 4590 families had no toilets. Since March 2017 till date, 10849 families have been added to the list, he said.

Following this report, the public development officers have done a survey which has identified that 3937 families have no toilets. As there is a difference of 653 houses while comparing both surveys, the district level officers are reviewing on this.

As per the present information, out of the 3937 families, 707 families have no door numbers. The pending toilets for 3230 families will be constructed through various programmes of the government. Those families which have no door numbers can apply under 94 c and they will get toilets in the coming days.

Zilla Panchayat President Meenakshi Shanthigodu was also present in the press meet.
