Mangaluru: “The protests will continue till the police officers insulting the religious scripture are punished”, former mayor and Dakshina Kannada United Muslim Organisation President K Ashraf said.

He was addressing a protest at Nehru Maidan here on October 11 against the police officers for allegedly desecrating the Quran during search operations at the residence of Kalandhar (one of the accused in Sharath Madiwala’s murder) in Bantwal Station limits, recently.

“In the district, harassment against Muslims is increasing. Unnecessarily innocent Muslims are sent to jail. We will not stop our protest till the police officers are punished for desecrating religious scriptures,” he said.

“On this issue, a memorandum was submitted to the chief minister, home minister, district in-charge minister and superintendent of police but no action was taken in this regard. Muslims are denied justice in this district. Even in Quereshi’s case also, we didn’t get justice”, he lamented.

Yakub Sayadi said that the Muslims were living in fear. Repeated assaults are made on Muslims and there are efforts going on to provoke their sentiments, he alleged.

Human Rights activist P B D’ Sa, Suhail Kandak and others were present.
