Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada district Deputy Commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh has asked the public to self-isolate, quarantine themselves and avoid unnecessary travel.

Addressing the media during the ‘Meet the Press’ programme organised at the ‘Patrika Bhavan’ on Friday, March 20, she said that keeping a track of all suspects is very necessary, but it is a very difficult task. “Over 1000 people have been asked to be quarantined at home as of Thursday, March 19. While the health department has suggest home quarantine for some people, they should follow the department’s directions and self-quarantine for 14 days. If no symptoms are found in 14 days, then it is confirmed that the person is healthy. However, opting for home quarantine and going out does not make any sense. People should cooperate with the district administration by following its directions,” she said.

She also informed that social distancing is a must. “People should avoid unnecessary travel and avoid thronging at the hospital in large numbers. We have noticed that people are crowding at OPDs of hospitals to get treatment. People need not panic over coronavirus. They can receive treatment in case of emergencies. If any positive cases are found in the district, the district administration will opt for total isolation,” she added.

Replying to a query on the functioning of pubs and gyms in the district despite the government’s order, the DC said that if anyone brings such instances to the notice of the district administration, they will take the necessary steps to shut them by consulting the concerned department.

Gayathri Nayak, City Development Cell officer informed that Asha workers have been asked to create awareness among the public. “Asha workers have collected necessary information which was handed over to the medical officer. Despite a partial shutdown, we see people roaming around. People should stop roaming in the city except when necessary,” she said.

Dakshina Kannada District Working Journalist Association president Srinivas Nayak Indaje welcomed the gathering, general secretary Ibrahim Adkastala rendered the vote of thanks. Senior journalist R C Bhat compered the programme. Health officer Rajesh and district information officer Khader Shah were also present.
