Sullia: A severely dehydrated eight-month-old elephant calf that was left stranded behind, after it strayed into human habitat here, near the Payaswini river bank near Basmadaka in Sullia along with seven other elephants has been shifted to the Sakkarebailu camp in Shivamogga on Monday with hopes that it may recover soon.
Reportedly, the calf was left behind by the herd after all efforts to take the dehydrated calf along with them failed. Informing about the same, Manjunath, Range Forest Officer, Puttur who escorted the calf to the Sakkarebailu camp said that he suspected that the herd did not return to take back the ward, which is unusual among the elephants since they might have felt that he would create trouble in their movement considering his health condition.
After a wait of two days and no visible improvement in the calf’s condition even after administering nine bottles of glucose on Sunday and 11 bottles on Monday, it was decided to shift the calf to Sakkarebailu as per the local doctors advise and permission from higher officials in the hope that it may recover under treatment from specialised doctors at the camp. “We hope the calf may get adjusted to the environment at the camp as there are a lot of elephants out there,” he added.
