Mangaluru: Following instances of jailbreak at Mangaluru district jail a decision had been taken to shift the prison to outskirts of the city, said DGP Satyanarayana Rao on Wednesday, May 3.
Speaking to reporters here after inaugurating the visitors’ gallery and laying foundation stone for the entrance arch at the district sub-jail here, Rao informed that the government is spending an approximate Rs 200 crore to build a prison over 68 acres of land at Mudipu’s Kurnadu village with amenities at par with Bengaluru jail.
The new prison will have helipad, hospital and library facilities as also video conferencing unit. Out of the 32 video conferencing unit in the state, the Dakshina Kannada district will have three unit system. It will also provide accommodation facilities for the prison officers.
He also informed that instead of jammers the government plans to implement Mobile Security Poll in the jail premises.
Harishekaran, IGP ( Western range), Chandra Shekar, commissioner of police, were present among others.
