Mangaluru: The Dakshina Kannada district unit of Congress paid homage to Indira Gandhi on her 98th birth anniversary at the district Congress Office here on Thursday, November 19.
District In-Charge Minister B Ramanath Rai paying a floral tribute to the portrait of former Prime Minister said that it was due to her farsightedness that all banks were still intact in India despite the global crisis that shut as many as 35 banks in the US.
He said that India received real independence after Indira Gandhi came to power as she played an integral role in uplifting the lives of poor by implementing various schemes and policies.
“Due to her inclination towards the poor, the capitalists moved away from her and later tried to frame her in all possible cases. However, not even a single accusation against her was proved right,” he said.
Speaking about communal tension in the district, he said that the vested interests of communal forces for political gains was the major reason for all the untoward incidents here and added that truth will prevail and all those at fault will be punished.
Indira Gandhi was assassinated on 31st October, 1984 at her 1, Safdarjung Road residence in New Delhi. She was killed by her Sikh bodyguards more than four months after Operation Blue Star, which was launched on the Golden Temple in Amritsar.
Referring to Indira Gandhi as ‘mother’, Rai said that she lived for the poor and sacrificed her life for the country. “There is not even a single leader from the BJP who has sacrificed his life for the country till date. Instead, they only know to divide people in the name of religion,” he added.
MCC Deputy Mayor Purushotham Chitrapura, Sadashiva Ullal, Suresh Ballal and TK Sudhir were present among others.
