Mangaluru: In a bid to maintain peace and harmony in the district, the administration invited ideas for the same, through a peace meet which was convened at the Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner’s office on Wednesday, November 25.

Leaders from different religions and functionaries of various organizations shared their ideas in the meet presided over by the Deputy Commissioner, so as to build a peaceful society.

One of the main suggestions was to install CCTV cameras in all sensitive areas and religious institutions. District Superintendent of Police Sharanappa said that installing cameras would not only help in prevention of untoward incidents but will also help in detection of crimes and criminals.

He said that Rs 35 lakh has been sanctioned in the first phase for the purpose. A tender will be called and the process will soon be initiated, he said, adding that all places of worship have already been asked to install good quality CCTV cameras and that majority of the managements have paid heed to the call.

In response to a question raised on the rise in ganja peddling cases in the city, which is also touted to be a reason for pushing the youth towards violence, Sharanappa said that the Police Department was aware of the peddling and the hubs where ganja is being sold. He informed that workshops are being conducted for college faculty and managements in this regard. He also said that the police are being sent among the public in muftis.

Sharanappa also said that preference will be given to community policing in the coming days.

DCP (law and order) Dr K M Shantharaj urged the public to support the police in the smooth functioning of the administration. He requested the public to contact the Police Control Room (0824 – 242228000) in case they encounter any untoward incidents.

Zilla Panchayat CEO Sreevidya said that measures will be taken to form peace committees at the Gram Panchayat levels. She also said that youth from all religions will be brought together to take part in cultural activities and efforts will be made through the education department to foster unity among school students.

DC AB Ibrahim said that Dakshina Kannada has progressed so much that it actually doesn’t need police force to take control; however, certain elements in the society were making it necessary for the police to be stern towards the public. He informed that banners and flexes henceforth, are to be put up only with an authorized stamp from the respective Panchayats. He said that all the people of a particular area will be brought together with the introduction of Gramotsavas.
