Mangaluru: In a rare but pleasant occurrence, Ullal, a place that has witnessed clashes for various reasons in the past, saw a harmonious co-existence of people irrespective of all barriers on Wednesday, October 27, as they put up a united front to protest against Yettinahole project.
An all-religion prayer ceremony was organized by Ullal zone Netravati Conservation Committee at the bank of the river. Prior to this, a protest march was held from the New Bus Stand to the Netravati Bridge.
Seer of Vajradehi Math Gurpur, Sri Rajashekharananda Swamiji slammed the politicians involved in the deal stating that despite knowing that the project was unscientific, they wanted to implement it only to fill their pockets and that they were least bothered about the impact the project would have on undivided Dakshina Kannada.
He said that he would keep the agitation alive by distributing jaggery and water at Kadri Temple on the day of Kannada Rajyotsava (November 1) this year.
Principal of Al Furqan Arabic Institute, Thokkottu, Maulana Yahya Tangal Madani said that man has no right to play with nature, adding that Quran has clearly mentioned about it. He advised the politicians concerned to revisit the project map and take a call to shelve it.
Dean of Mangalore Diocese (south zone), John Baptist D’Souza gave a call to the people to stay united and fight until the government is compelled to call off the project. He said that it was unjust to break the unified structure of river which is formed with the combination of its tributaries.
Various organizations including Ullal Bhagawati temple, Thokkottu Nagakannika Rakteshwari temple, Kapikad Umamaheshwari temple, Thokkottu Vithoba Rukmayi temple, Thokkottu Gouri Ganesha Mahila Mandali, Thokkottu Vasuki Seva Sangha, Vishwa Hindu Parishat Ullal, Bajrang Dal, Thokkottu Auto Rickshaw drivers and owners association, vehicle drivers and owners association Thokkottu, South Kanara Tailors Association, ABC Thokkottu, Merchants Association Thokkottu, Kesari Mitra Mandali Kumpala, St Sebastian Church Permannur,St Thomas Church Sajipa,Nithya Sahaya Matha Church Nithyadharanagara, Our Lady the Queen of the Universe Church Ranipura, Our Lady of Mercy Church Paneer, St Lawrence Church Taudugoli, Indian Catholic Youth Movement, SKSSF, Jammath-e-Islami Education, Wisdom Welfare Association Mudipu, Rotary and Lions Club Ullal and Tulunada Rakshana Vedike were present among others.
