Mangaluru: “There should be courage and self-confidence in the minds of patients to fight against any deadly disease and their family members should also instil positive thoughts in their minds,” said G Shankar Family Trust founder Dr G Shankar here on Friday, October 4.

He was addressing the gathering after donating Rs 50 lakhs to 76 cancer patients and 107 people suffering from kidney failure at the Father Muller’s Hospital. Shankar made this donation on the eve of his 64th birthday.

Shankar said that technology has improved a lot in recent times and almost any disease can be cured with advanced technology and treatment.

Father Muller’s Charitable Institutions director Fr Richard Coelho said, “Physical and mental health deteriorates when a person suffers from any disease including cancer. During that time, they should be given maximum care. The Shankar Family Trust is doing noble work by assisting cancer and kidney patients.”

Administrative officer Fr Rudolf Ravi D’Sa, chief medical officer Uday Kumar and chief nursing officer Janet were present.

Nadoja Dr G Shankar donated Rs 73 lakhs to 289 cancer and kidney patients in KMC Hospital (Attavar) during a cheque distribution programme held at the Shushrutha Hall on Friday, October 4.

Every year, Dr Shankar celebrates his birthday in a unique way by donating money for the treatment of poor cancer and kidney patients so that they too can be capable of leading a healthy and happy life.

Addressing the gathering, he said, “Since the past 4 years I am helping cancer and kidney patients in my capacity. We are distributing nearly Rs 2 crores to patients admitted to KMC Attavar, Fr Muller Hospital, and Wenlock Hospital in Mangaluru and tomorrow we will be doing the same in KMC Manipal, Adarsh Hospital, and the government hospital in Udupi.”

Dr G Shankar further said, “It is shocking to hear that cancer is a deadly disease. But now, there is a treatment for the disease and through PET scan the doctors can find out which part of the body is affected by cancer. Through this scan, doctors can treat a particular area and cure the patient. I know that the treatment is expensive but this is a small contribution from my side. Every year on my birthday I do my part to financially support the poor patients. Those born on this earth will have to die one day but we should support those who suffer from cancer and help them to fight the disease and recover.”

“Death is not in our hands, there are various reasons due to which people die. A healthy person may suddenly die from a heart attack. Nowadays, due to stress, people jump from the Nethravati river and end their life instantly. But diseases like cancer kills a person with utmost suffering and affects the family too. Family members should help and encourage patients in their fight against the disease. KMC hospital and G Shankar trust are always with you. Don’t lose hope,” he added.

Afterwards, Dr G Shankar was felicitated by KMC Hospital along with the prayers of good health and happiness by children. Demand Drafts amounting to a total of Rs 73 lakhs were distributed among the 289 cancer and kidney-disease patients by Dr G Shankar.

Children cancer specialist Dr Harsha Prasada delivered the vote of thanks while Udayshankar compered the programme.

KMC Hospital (Attavar) Medical Superintendent Dr John Ramapuram, Deputy Medical Superintendent Dr Deepak Madi, KMC Hospital (Ambedkar Circle) Regional Chief of Clinical Services Dr Anand Venugopal, and others were present.
