Mangaluru: A group of Mangalureans observed ‘Climate Strike Day’ outside the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) between 5 pm and 7 pm on Friday, September 20.

The intention behind the unique programme was to raise awareness among the public about how our fast-paced and unsustainable lifestyle is damaging the planet.

The objective was also to tell the leaders that people want better options that are good for the planet. It is a known fact that, Mangaluru being a coastal city, is already facing the brunt of climate change. Irregular rains, heavy downpour, sea erosion, plastic pollution, unscientific method of disposing waste among others are a few of the problems faced by the city.

Hence, a group of people observed this unique demonstration and stressed the need to protect nature. Meanwhile, the placards displayed on the occasion, like “We speak for the Earth”, “Don’t pollute air and water”, “Save water” and others were some of the most attractive.

The Greta Thunberg, a 16-year-old Swedish girl started this movement by organising a silent protest to raise awareness about the climate crisis. In 2018, she skipped school every Friday for the cause and now, thousands of people around the world have joined her.
