Elderly couple end life over financial, health crisis

Uppinangadi: Old age coupled with sickness forced a 60-year-old man and his wife to commit suicide by consuming poison, at their residence in Periyottu on Monday, July 16.

The deceased – Sanjeeva Poojary and his wife Sita (57) were residents of Barya village in the Belthangady taluk.

Owing to ill-health, Sanjeeva had been unable to take up coolie work, which was the only source of livelihood for the couple. It is suspected that the couple resorted to the extreme step out of sheer desperation due to their financial and health conditions.

The couple is survived by three children – two daughters and a son named Janardhan Poojary. Janardhan Poojary stays at the same house with the now deceased couple. On fateful Monday afternoon, the couple had retired to their room as usual. Later, their daughter-in-law, Mohini (wife of Janardhan) heard some agonizing screams emanating from the elderly couple’s room and rushed to their help only to find that the door was locked from the inside. She then sought help from the neighbours to break open the door. Unfortunately, Sanjeeva had already passed away by then and Sita, who was in a serious condition, passed away on the way to the hospital.

Uppinangadi SI Nandakumar visited the village and conducted an inspection. A case stands registered at the Uppinangadi police station.
