Udupi : The Shirva police have arrested a 33 year old person from Alevoor on the charges of making extortion calls and threatening granite businessmen. The arrest was made on April 3, Thursday.
The arrested person is Saleem alias Manchi Saleem. The police rounded him up when he had approached one Madhav Kamath, a granite dealer of Bantakal to collect money.
Kamath had earlier complained to the Shirva police on April 2 that he has been repeatedly receiving threatening calls from Nagaraja Balegar and Santosh Balegar, both lodged in Hiriadka jail asking him tpo pay Rs 2 lakhs. Kamath said they had demanded the money to get released from prison.
As per the direction of the police, Kamath asked the callers to collect the money at a particular place and when Saleem arrived on behalf of them, he was caught.
It is learnt, the arrested person is a friend of Santosh Poojari. He has been produced before court and remanded to judicial custody.
