Mangaluru: In a major relief for consumers, the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) has launched a lightweight cylinder ‘The New Indane composite cylinders’ in the State for household use. The first connection of the Dakshina Kannada District was handed over to BJP MP Nalin Kumar Kateel.

These LPG cylinders are termed lightweight as it is made of polymer composite. Further, the cylinders will only have half the weight of a standard metallic cylinder currently used. The composite cylinders come with a translucent body that enables customers to accurately check the LPG liquid level against the light.

The major advantage of composite cylinders is easier portability compared to traditional cylinders. Further, the safety features guarantee that if a fire broke out, the cylinder will not explode. The rust-free composite cylinders do not corrode or rust unlike their metal equivalents and therefore there are less chances of leaving stains and marks. The composite cylinder has a more visually appealing and fresh design and it requires low maintenance as compared to steel cylinder.

Composite cylinders were launched by IOC Chairman in 5 kg and 10 kg sizes in Delhi and Hyderabad market on March 27, 2021. Later, it was extended to all the major cities. The cylinders are currently available in major cities of Karnataka, Bengaluru and Mysuru and also with all the Indane distributors of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi Districts.

The 10 kg variant is marketed only under the domestic non-subsidised category whereas the 5 kg variant is available under the domestic non-subsidised category and as free trade LPG (FTL) through various points of sale. The security deposit for the domestic non-subsidised category is Rs. 3,350 for the 10 kg variant and Rs. 2,150 for the 5 kg variant. Indane customers can replace their existing steel cylinder with the state-of-the-art composite cylinder by paying the difference in security deposit.
