Mangaluru: First-year BE classes for the academic year 2019-20 were inaugurated at St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC), Mangaluru, on Saturday, August 10.
Airbus India (Bengaluru) Head of Human Resources Suraj Chettri was the chief guest of the occasion.
Suraj Chettri inaugurated the ceremony and felicitated the students for their PU and CET achievements. In his inaugural speech, Chettri said that the students are free to have fun, make friends and enjoy as long as studies are their first priority. He stated that engineering is the right profession and engineers will never go out of fashion. Referencing some of the engineering marvels around the globe, he called upon the students to make good use of their time at SJEC and further urged them to try and solve complex real-life problems in a cost-effective manner.
Addressing the newcomers, principal of the college Dr Rio D’Souza said that the management of SJEC was happy to welcome the new batch and their parents. He remarked that students opt to join SJEC owing to the discipline of the college and went on to say that even though discipline is a priority of the college, it is blended with affection and care towards the students. Reiterating the VTU motto “Above all, be human”, Dr D’Souza called upon all the new students to be a human before being an engineer.
In his presidential address, SJEC director Fr Wilfred Prakash D’Souza said that the college is known as a green and clean campus with good infrastructure and competent faculty members. He assured the parents of the first-year students that their wards were at the right place and called upon the students to remain grounded to their roots even if they happen to touch the epitome of success as they embark on their journey of life.
Rachana Crasta and Pramila Rita D’Souza compered the event. Head of Physics Department Dr Vincent Crasta welcomed the gathering. Dr Ramananda delivered the vote of thanks.
