Mangaluru: Fisherwomen staged a huge protest demanding not to shift the existing fish market from State Bank area to other location and urged to construct a full-fledged market at the same place, on Thursday, December 20
The protesters informed that the existing fish market is convenient to the customers and vendors. They also demanded that priority should be given to constructing fish market under smart city project.
Addressing the protesters, fish vending women’s association legal adviser S P Chengappa said, “over 1000 women have been leading their life through fish vending and no proper fish market has been constructed so far. There is no proper basic facilities at the existing fish market. Though Mangaluru has been listed under smart city project, no work has been undertaken under smart city project so far. Priority should be given to constructing full-fledged fish market under smart city project at the earliest”, he said.
Condemning both central and the state government for their anti-people governance Chengappa said, “Mangaluru is famous for fishing activities and fishermen contribute much to the growth of our economy. However, the demands of fishermen have always fallen on deaf ears. If no measures are taken to construct a full-fledged fish market, the protest will be intensified in the future days”, he cautioned.
Hundreds of fisherwomen participated in the protest holding placards.
