Mangaluru: Keeping forth a five decade long demand for all weather fishing harbour at Kulai, fishermen on Thursday staged a stir outside Deputy Commissioner’s office.
Addressing the protesters former chairman of Karnataka Fisheries Development Corporation and Convener of Meenugarara Horata Samiti Ramachandra Baikpampady said that though the centre had proposed to construct the fishing harbour at a total cost of Rs. 230 crore, with Rs 70 crore to be borne by the New Mangalore Port Trust, the project has not been able to take off as the state government is yet to provide environment and Coastal Regulatory Zone clearance.
However, as per insiders, though the clearance has been secured four months ago, the state has not sent any report to the centre on the same, there by stranding the project. He demanded the state government to send the clearance report to the centre by July 18 so that the project could take off facilitating thousands of fishermen.
Members of Meenugara Horata Samiti and Sampradayika (traditional) Meenugarara Sangha in large numbers took part in the protest.
