Kasaragod: An alert trackman succeeded in averting a major mishap after fissures appeared in the Kanhangad–Chithari railway line on Friday morning, April 7.
Trackman Vijayan noticed fissures few minutes before the arrival of Thiruvanathapuram-Mangaluru-Malabar train. He ignited detonators available with support staff to generate smoke on the track and managed to stop the advancing train 500 meters from the point where fissures were found.
Railway engineers rushed to the spot immediately and rectified the faulty section. Three trains including Maveli express had passed minutes before the fissures had occurred on tracks.
Train traffic was held up for more than 2 ½ hours on account of damage and repair.
