Mangaluru: The Bioethics Unit of Father Muller Charitable Institutions (FMCI) organised ‘World Bioethics Day – 2019’ at its Decennial Memorial Hall on Monday, November 25.
Dr Animesh Jain, Head of the Mangaluru unit of UNESCO Chair in Bioethics, Haifa inaugurated the programme and informed that the institution has enabled students to acquire knowledge on bioethics, which helps to adopt good communication skills, humanity and compassion for others. Bioethics is concerned with ethical questions involved in human understanding of life. It is born out of the necessity of a critic’s reflection on ethical conflicts, which are caused by the progress in life science and medicine. Technological and medical tools have an important role in society and they have to be managed, he said.
Father Muller Medical College (FMCI) Dean Dr Jayaprakash Alva, in his presidential address, said that having knowledge in bioethics is very important in every medical college and it is the right time for a student to decide what’s right and wrong. “Ethics involves a set of rules that society has agreed on about living with other people, which are human rights. Its importance is reflected in different parts of our society such as healthcare, research and our society in general. Bioethics in healthcare brought about awareness to health workers of the medical practice, as well as enriching the ability of health workers to further understand the patient as a person,” he added.
FMMC Assistant Administrator Rev Fr Nelson Pais, vice dean Dr Padmaja Uday Kumar, Head of Bioethics Unit Dr Nagesh K R, Associate Professor of ENT Dr Vinay Rao, Head of Research Unit Dr Sanjeev Rai and others were present.
