Mangaluru: An eminent personality in the realm of banking, P Jayaram Bhat, the former chairman of Karnataka Bank, passed away on Wednesday, August 9. Bhat established himself as a prominent figure in the banking sector, spanning a remarkable three-decade-long journey.
Having begun his career as a seasoned banker, P Jayaram Bhat later transitioned from the field of education to banking.
P Jayaram Bhat embarked on his illustrious banking journey when he joined Karnataka Bank Limited in 1973 as a probationary officer. His dedicated efforts and prowess led him to ascend through the ranks over the years.
In 1976, Bhat’s capabilities were recognized as he assumed the role of a Branch Manager, a position he dutifully held across various branches for an impressive span of 14 years. His exceptional performance paved the way for his promotion to the esteemed position of chief accountant at the Bank’s headquarters in 1993. The pinnacle of his professional journey within the bank was reached in 2005 when he assumed the mantle of Chief General Manager.
On the 14th of July 2009, P Jayaram Bhat was appointed as the Managing Director & CEO of Karnataka Bank, a testament to his leadership acumen and contribution to the institution. His influence extended beyond the bank’s borders as he actively participated on the Board of Universal Sompo General Insurance Company Ltd., a joint venture involving the Bank, during the period spanning 2007 to 2009.
In addition to his unwavering dedication to the banking field, P Jayaram Bhat nurtured a profound love for shuttle badminton, cricket, and the melodic notes of Carnatic classical music.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Shubha Bhat, and their two cherished children – a son and a daughter.
