Former union minister Dhananjay Kumar passes away

Mangaluru: Former union minister Dhananjay Kumar passed away here on Monday, March 4 at 1.30 PM.

He was suffering from a kidney ailment and was under treatment from the past six months at Unity Hospital in Falnir.

His mortal remains will be kept for public viewing tomorrow, on March 5 from 7 AM to 10 AM at his residence in Kadri Kambala.

Later, the mortal remains will be taken to his home town Venur for the final rites.

Dhananjay Kumar served as the union civil aviation minister in 1996, union minister of finance from 1999 to 2000 and union minister of state for textile from 2000-03 under the then NDA government led by prime minister Late Atal Bihari Vajapyee.

Being a staunch loyalist of former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa, Kumar later broke ties with the BJP and joined the newly formed party of BS Yeddyurappa – the Karnataka Janata Party. Kumar was elected as the president of the KJP. However, this was horrible lived.

With the disintegration of the KJP, he moved into the Congress party folds and remained away from political scenes reportedly due to deteriorating health conditions.

He is survived by his wife Vanitha and two children.
