Mangaluru: To ensure a hassle-free journey for senior citizens it has been decided to reserve four seats for them in city buses, said Deputy Commissioner KG Jagadish during a Regional Transport Authority (RTA) meeting held at the RTO office on Thursday, May 4.

“Commuters who travel in the bus should voluntarily come forward to provide seat to the senior citizen but it is not happening. In future, four seats will be reserved for senior citizen in KSRTC and Private Buses. In absensce of senior citizens it can be used by the common citizens” said DC KG Jagadish.

The move met some resistance from bus owners who raised objections that since seats were already being reserved for women, handicaps and senior citizens any further additions would reduce the seat availability for common people will be less. However, the Deputy Commissioner pointed out that common people could manage to travel in a standing position but the same would be very difficult for senior citizens, hence it is better to reserve four seats to senior citizens.

DCP Sanjeev Patil who was present at the meeting said that heavy vehicle should compulsorily adhere to the lane discipline in the city. Heavy vehicles should move on left side of the median on the road. However, while overtaking the vehicles can use the right side.

SP Borase, RTO GS Hegde and others were present.
