Moodbidri: A large Christmas star has been installed at the Mount Carmel Church in Shirthady of the Moodbidri taluk. However, what makes this star unique is that it carries a three-fold message- the nearing of Christmas, reduce use of plastic and communal harmony.

This 20-foot tall, 20-foot wide star has been made by three young men- Prasanna Joyal Sequeira, Yathish Kulal and Abdul Rauf, with the help of seven other youth from various communities, who spent a total of 15 days on this project, without using a single piece of plastic. All of the youth involved with the project wore a T-shirt with Christmas wish message during the 15 days.

To create this behemoth, the youth used bamboo and wooden logs for its skeleton and wrapped it in a white cloth. They then covered the cloth with arecanut husk. House in the centre of the star is a statue of infant Jesus in a swinging cradle. A fountain has also been made near the star apart from the lighting, to add to the beauty of the star.

Apart from all this, the youth also made a 20-metre long Rosary out of 60 arecanuts and cloth threads and placed it on the star.

The three explained that their aim was to spread the message of communal harmony by involving members from various communities. They also expressed their hope for the star to uphold the principles of unity and communal harmony and for the younger generation to learn to respect each other.
