Mangaluru: In order to create awareness on conserving nature, the city based Vikas Group of Institutions has launched a new programme ‘Vruksha Vikasa’, under the tagline of ‘Manegondu Mara’ (Tree for each house), which was formally inaugurated at the premises of Vikas College in Maryhill on Saturday, July 6.
Nagaland Governor P B Acharya inaugurated this programme by planting a fruit-bearing sapling in the presence of Padma Shri awardee Salumarada Thimmakka and other dignitaries. After planting the sapling, Acharya sprinkled water on the sapling and wished success for the future endeavours of Vikas College. Though Governor P B Acharya had to address the students of the college, left soon after the inauguration because of his busy schedules.
Salumarada Thimmakka, who inaugurated the stage programme, said that if people protect nature, the nature in turn would protect them. “Students have a greater responsibility of conserving nature and they should understand the importance of planting saplings. Every student should plant atleast one sapling in their home which would help conserve nature, she added.
MP Nalin Kumar Kateel said, “Usually, educational institutions always insist that their students score high marks in the examinations and get good name and fame to them. However, Vikas Group of Institutions has been striving hard to create awareness among its students on conserving our nature through multiple programmes. If we really want to protect our ancient culture, we should concentrate on protecting our nature. Students should follow the footsteps of Salumarada Thimmakka as she has taught us how to protect our nature,” he said.
Chairman of Vikas Group of Institutions and former minister Krishna J Palemar informed that Vikas Institution intended to plant over 5000 saplings in the coming days through this ‘Vruksha Vikasa’ programme.
Meanwhile, Rashmith, who brought laurels to the college through his academic excellence was honoured on the occasion. The college also felicitated Salumarada Thimmakka on the occasion. Mangaluru North MLA Dr. Y Bharath Shetty presided over the programme. Dean Dr. Manjula Rao, Trustee Koragappa, Coordinator Parthasarathi Palemar among others were present.
