In an effort to enhance the appeal of polling booths, neglected government schools are undergoing renovations, including fresh coats of paint and artistic designs. Anandh K, the Zilla Panchayat CEO and nodal officer for Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP), revealed that Dakshina Kannada district has identified 1,800 polling booths, with 1,218 situated within educational institutions.

It’s observed that government educational facilities receive much-needed attention during state assembly or general elections, as they are repurposed into polling booths. This initiative not only indirectly betters the condition of the schools but also aims to encourage higher voter turnout by creating a more inviting environment at polling stations.

An anonymous government teacher expressed appreciation for the minor repairs and attention given to government schools during elections, acknowledging their significance for the institutions.

Anandh highlighted that Dakshina Kannada district’s infrastructure and facilities surpass those of other districts. Any deficiencies are addressed through local urban bodies, focusing on repairs to amenities such as washrooms, classrooms, ramps, and electricity connections. Funding for these repairs is sourced from local bodies, as there is no separate allocation from the Election Commission of India (ECI). Additionally, officials ensure that water tanks are filled prior to polling day and that there is a steady supply of water.

Under SVEEP, 78 model polling booths have been established across the district, further contributing to the efficient conduct of elections and ensuring a smooth voting experience for citizens.
