Mangaluru: The students belonging to government schools at Mangalore got a chance to step aboard the Indian Coast Guard Ship “Shoor” here on January 13 .
The visit was part of the 41st Raising Day celebrations of Indian Coast Guard (which falls on 01 February) wherein the Coast Guard Karnataka has been continuously interacting with students from various schools.
The students were provided an insight about the Indian Coast Guard and the working environment onboard ship so as to motivate them and make them better citizens.
It may be recalled that Indian Coast Guard is doing yeoman’s service in rescuing precious lives at sea both during natural calamities like “Cyclone Ockhi” or man-made disasters like oil spills, fire incidents onboard merchant ships. In 2017 itself, Indian Coast Guard ships based at Mangalore has saved 192 lives in distress at sea, including 81 lives when cyclone Ockhi hit the West coast of India.
The staff on ICGS Shoor interacted with the students and pointed out the importance of safety, security of the maritime zones of the Nation. The students were also encouraged to hone their educational knowledge and the practical utility for the betterment of the society.
The students took keen interest in the systems and functioning of ICGS Shoor. Queries raised by the students were answered by the ship’s staff.
Deputy Inspector General S S Dasils, TM, the Commander, Coast Guard Karnataka, expressed his satisfaction over the preparation of the NEXT-GEN for their future endeavours. The Commander stated, “The eagerness of the students to learn and improve should be maintained. The fire in the belly will make them worthy successors in the future.”
