Mangaluru: “Parents are forced to spend 40 per cent of their income on their children’s education in private institutions. This can be prevented if the government schools are strengthened. Therefore, discussions have been held in this regard to allocate more funds in the next budget to strengthen public schools in order to bring them in line with the private schools,” said Minister for Primary and Secondary Education S Suresh Kumar, on Saturday, February 15.
He was speaking after visiting Padma Shri awardee Harekala Hajabba’s Newpadpu school on Saturday.
Minister Suresh Kumar also informed that measures will be taken to ensure that more special-needs children get SSLC education. “Relaxation of time for special-needs children to write exams and many other measures will be taken to enable them to attend and write exams. Measures will also be taken to address the problem of shortage of staff and teachers in the education department,” he added.
Suresh Kumar asked students to realise Harekala Hajabba’s dream by securing good marks in the SSLC educations. “The SSLC students are the real ambassadors of the school. If SSLC students succeed in getting good results, then the reputation of that school will go higher. As Hajabba strived hard to construct this school to ensure that no child is deprived of education, all students should study well and bring a good name to this school. It is the only way to respect Hajabba,” he said and promised to take serious note of Hajabba’s demands with regard to the Harekala school.”
Prior to this, Hajabba had submitted a memorandum to the education minister, asking for the school to be upgraded into a public school, a strong compound wall, bus facility, drinking water facility, playground, laboratory, library, computers etc.
MLA U T Khader, former MLC Capt Ganesh Karnik, Taluk Panchayat president Mohammed Monu and others were present.
