Mangaluru: Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC were imposed within a 200-metre-radius of all high schools inside the City Police Commissionerate limits of Udupi and Mangaluru from Monday February 14 to February 19. This was done in response to the Hijab controversy.

City Police Commissioner N. Shashi Kumar informed that the order will be in effect from 6.00 am on Monday till 6.00 pm on February 19. The commissioner said that because Mangaluru Commissionerate is currently a very sensitive location, the orders have been clamped to maintain law and order and avoid crowd formation.

“The prohibitory order was issued on the request of the Udupi District’s three sub-divisional police officers,” Deputy Commissioner Kurma Rao said.

Udupi BJP MLA Raghupathi Bhat held a peace meeting on Sunday February 13 with parents of students and several political-religious leaders, at which it was decided to allow Hijab inside schools and colleges in Udupi that do not mandate a specific uniform or previously allowed it as a norm.
