Mangaluru: The people of the coastal city now have a reason for a ‘must’ visit to the Pilikula Biological Park for some special reasons.
Recently, a Hippopotamus named Kavita has given birth to three calves-one male and two females.
These births in captivity have proven that the environment in the zoo is apt for breeding. This makes the Pilikula Biological Park one among the 14 major zoos to have animal births in captivity.
According to the Park Director Jayaprakash Bhandary, the mother and its babies are safe and healthy.
Park sources said that a year ago, one male and two female hippos were brought from Bannerghatta National Park to Pilikula Biological Park.
Jayaprakash Bhandary added that the Indian Wild Dogs brought from Indira Gandhi Zoological Park, Vishakapatnam under the animal exchange programme, will be open for public view soon. Around four Indian Wild Dogs have already reached the park, but are not yet allowed for public viewing.
The park has also planned to get in a variety of species of animals and birds through the exchange programme soon.
CCTVs too are installed in different zones to study animal behaviour.
