Mangaluru: In order to control diarrhea among little children, the Dakshina Kannada district Health Department will be launching a programme called ‘Intensified Diarrhea Control Fortnight (IDCF)’ from June 3 to June 17, 2019.

Informing about the programme, District Health Officer Dr. Ramakrishna Rao told mediapersons that the programme was particularly for children below the age group of 5 years. He said, “When infants suffer from diarrhea, they lose a lot of fluids and this may result in death as well. By creating awareness about diarrhea and its cures, we can prevent the occurrence of such incidents. Hot water and sugar/salt solutions are some home remedies to cure diarrhea. However, zinc tablets and Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) packets are also effective medicines for diarrhea.”

“In the next 15 days, the health department would distribute ORS packets to all the houses that have children within the age group of 0 to 5, regardless of whether they have diarrhea or not. This will help create awareness among the people. ORS medicine ensures oral rehydration as the infant will be dehydrated due to loss of body fluids.  Our goal is to distribute ORS packets to 1, 40,288 children”, Rao added.
