Illegal sand mining: 17 boats and sand worth Rs 18 Lakh seized

Mangaluru: The Mangaluru Rural police seized 17 boats for allegedly extracting sand from Nethravathi river near Adyar, on Friday, November 30. The worth of the seized properties is estimated at Rs 18 Lakh.

Sources from Mangaluru Rural police station said that they had received an information about illegal sand mining in Nethravathi river near Adyar College. Based on this, a team of police headed by Mangaluru Rural Inspector rushed to the spot. They found 17 boats extracting sand illegally from the CRZ area of Nethravathi river. When police arrived at the spot, those indulged in mining fled the scene leaving behind everything. Police seized the boats and sand.

The seized boats have been handed over to the Department of Mines and Geology for further investigation, police sources said.
