Illegal sand mining: 9 lorries, two boats seized

Mangaluru: Bantwal police seized nine lorries and two boats, which were engaged in illegally extracting sand at Phalguni river near Bellur on Sunday.

As Bantwal police received an information of illegal sand mining at Phalguni river, a team of police headed by ASP Rishikesh Sonavane ( Bantwal sub-division) and Bantwal Inspector T D Nagaraj rushed to the spot and found men engaged in extraction of sand. However, those who were engaged in sand mining escaped from the spot, leaving their boats and lorries. Police seized 9 tipper lorries and two boats from the spot. The worth of the total seized properties is estimated around Rs 58 lakh.

The seized properties would be handed over to the Department of Mines and Geology, police sources said
