Autonomous colleges in the region are witnessing a significant surge in demand for bachelor of computer applications (BCA) and bachelor of commerce (BCom) programs this year. This shift in demand marks a departure from previous years, where commerce courses dominated. Notably, the demand for BCA has been steadily rising over the past two years, particularly in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Early Provisional Admissions and Enrollment Trends
Many students are opting for provisional admissions to BCA courses based on their previous academic records, even before the announcement of PU results. Kumara Hegde BA, principal of Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara College, Ujire, revealed that three out of every five applications received are for the BCA course. The college has responded to this increased demand by expanding its BCA capacity, adding an additional 80 seats last year, bringing the total to 170. Last academic year alone, the college received 450 applications for BCA.
Uncertainty Surrounding NEP-2020 and State-specific Policies
Confusion looms among students, colleges, and universities regarding the fate of NEP-2020, with talks of a state-specific education policy emerging. Vineetha Rai, registrar (evaluation) at School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya, highlighted student dilemma over potential syllabus changes, leading some to adopt a wait-and-watch approach before committing to admissions.
Trend of Kerala Students Seeking Admission
In a notable shift, colleges are observing an increase in admissions from Kerala students, a trend that had declined post-Covid. Sr M Venissa, principal of St Agnes College, remarked on the rise in Kerala student admissions, particularly for courses like the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).
Changes in Admission Procedures
St Aloysius (deemed to be university) has opted to conduct an entrance test for BCA admission seekers, signaling a shift in admission procedures. Non-autonomous institutions, despite ongoing even semester activities, have also commenced their admission processes, allowing candidates to register their names.
