Mangaluru: The Joint Action Committee of Trade Union (JCTU) has called for a nation-wide strike on January 8, in order to place their demands such as minimum wages, regularisation of jobs, job security etc., before the government.

Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) district general secretary Sunil Kumar Bajal told reporters here on Friday, January 3 that, as part of the nation-wide protest, the district unit of the JCTU will stage a stir in front of the Town Hall on January 8, at around 10.30 AM. “The Union Government has been implementing several anti-people programmes causing the labour class to suffer. Due to the economic crisis, several companies are sacking their employees. Hence, the Government should change its economic policies. Even though the Supreme Court has directed that proper wages be given to the workers, many private companies are ill-treating their employees and denying them even minimum wages. Contract labourers in government departments should be regularised immediately,” he said.

“The people who have been working under unorganised sectors have no job security and live in fear. There is no proper price for the crops of the farmers. Sky-rocketing prices of grocery items are causing the common person to lead a painful existence. Despite this, labourers, the middle class and poor people find it very difficult to lead a normal life. The Prime Minister Modi-led Union Government is favouring only corporates,” Sunil alleged.

Meanwhile, he asked the labourers and members of the general public to participate in the protest in large numbers on January 8. “The members from various labour unions such as INTUC, AITUC, CITU, HMS, AIBEA, AOBOA, BEFI, Insurance, Post, RMS, Railway, and government employees will participate in the protest,“ he added.

Leaders Vasanth Achary, Chittaranjan Shetty, H V Rao, Balakrishna Shetty, Seetharam Berinje and others were present.
