Mangaluru: A Mangaluru zone kabaddi tournament is on for three days which started on Monday, October 17 and go on till 19 October at Urwa Market ground. The Mangalore University in association with Besant Evening College conducted the zonal kabaddi tournament to promote kabaddi as a sport of grits, strength and agility.
The inter-collegiate tournament saw 38 college entries from Dakshina Kannada and Kodagu districts, a parallel tournament is also being conducted in Udupi at Poorna Prajna College ground for Udupi zonal tournament. The finals at both Udupi and Mangalorean venue will be held on 18 October for the individual trophies. However, it doesn’t end there.
On 19 October, there will be a final face-off between four winning teams from Mangalore zone and four from Udupi zone for the ‘Sri Dharmasthala Rathnavarma Heggade’ rolling trophy to be held at the Urwa Market gorund. To intensify the battle between the teams, three kabaddi courts have been marked and 40 referees have been assigned. A full fletched ambulance and a two wheeler ambulance are on stand-by in case of medical emergency.
Mangaluru MLA J R Lobo, Women’s National Education Society President Kudpi Jagadeesh Shenoy, Besant Evening College Correspondent Narayan Shenoy, Besant College Principal Dr. Lakshminarayan Bhat, Besant Alumni President Pradeep Kumar and Mangaluru University Director Kishore Kumar were present at the inaugural ceremony.
A practice court and resting area has also been made by the organisers. The pre-semi finals will be concluded today, 17 October. The semi finals and finals will be held the following day.
