Mangaluru: Kanachur Institute of Medical Sciences, one of the leading medical institutes in the region on the occasion of World TB Day, undertook an initiative to create awareness on the subject.Based on the global theme, “Unite to end TB. Leave no one Behind” devised by the World Health Organization, the institute in collaboration with the Dakshina Kannada district administration, Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat, District Health and Family Welfare, District TB Treatment Centre, Dakshina Kannada District TB Prevention Group and Kanachur Hospital held an event here at Kanachur Hospital & Research Centre, Auditorium, III rd floor on March 24 to help eradicate the epidemic.

The ceremony started with a welcome speech from Badhrudeen M N, District In-charge for tuberculosis and was preceded with the singing of the Karnataka anthem and lighting of the lamp to mark the event.

Addressing the gathering, Ramakrishna Rao M, District In-charge for Health and Family Welfare and chief guest on the occasion, spoke about the symptoms as also the cure for tuberculosis adding that such initiatives are needed to completely eradicate this epidemic from all over the world.

Further, he mentioned that for people to remain healthy in a society requires joint efforts from all the business houses including the corporate sector, private entities and government in creating awareness and providing quality treatment for the people instead of simply putting the responsibility on the government.

He also advised people in general to quit smoking, drinking alcohol, which in turn will boost their immune system and thereby reduce the chances of them contracting diseases including tuberculosis.

He stressed on the fact that despite facilities available for the treatment of tuberculosis, since it was found in 1982, people often tend to ignore the symptoms of the disease thinking it to be a normal case of cough and cold. He also highlighted the fact how several of the patients stop taking the medicines prescribed by the doctor once their symptoms disappear, which helps the disease to remain active in their body. He thus added that it was imperative for a person to complete the entire medicinal course to be cured of TB.

Speaking on the occasion, U K Monu, Chairman, Kanachur Hospital shared a few words about his own experience with his father. He said that it was better to get oneself checked up regularly and know what’s going on within the body than to realise that something is wrong in the last stages.

Abdul Rahiman, Director, Kanachur Hospital; Dr. Rohan Monis, Chief Administrative Medical Officer and senior faculty members were present.
