Ullal: Minister UT Khader, on Tuesday, paid a visit to the Kanekere area of his constituency, where the people have been complaining of drinking water contamination.

This news portal had carried news about the agony of the residents of Kanekere area where fuel from an unidentified source has contaminated the drinking water.

Following this development, Khader visited the area and interacted with the local residents as well as Belma GP elected representatives. The local residents even demonstrated how the water from the wells in the village have turned flammable and the minister was evidently shocked.

Later, speaking to reporters, Khader said that he will contact NITK and MRPL and identify experts who can locate the origin of the problem. However, the locals have been blaming a fuel station in the vicinity for their plight, while the owners of the fuel station have refused to own up to the mistake.

At least three wells have been contaminated and hence, the Minister said, the same will be drained dry and purification process will be started soon.

He said that to solve the drinking water problems in the village, the Zilla Panchayat has been asked to identify land and start digging borewells.

While taking note of the fact that waste disposal is a major issue in the region, he said that discussions will be held with the authorities concerned and Sewage Treatment Plant will be set up here at a cost of Rs 20 lakhs.
