Mangaluru : Mayor Kavitha Sanil who has black belts in Indian Karate and Indian Budokan Karate will participate in National Level Open Karate Championship which will be held in Mangaluru in the month of November.
Kavitha, a national level Karate Champion in both Indian Karate and Indian Budokan Karate is making a come back after nine years by taking part in the National Level Open Karate Championship.
Speaking to newskarnataka.com, Kavitha Sanil said, “Apparently, I am the only woman to secure black belt in Indian Karate and Budocon Karate styles. I have bagged 58 gold medals and 18 silver medals in Karate championships and successively from 1992 to 2008, I have won Women’s Grand National Karate Championship. I got married in 2007 and with 2.5 months pregnancy it was my last championship.”
She also said that she was the only woman to do the stunt of having 350 cc Bullet run over her stomach.
For Indian Karate Surendra and Suresh Shetty trained her. Grand Master for Indian Karate is B M Narasimhan from Chennai. For Indian Budokan Karate, Padmanabha trained her and Grand Masters are Richard Choo and Parameshwar.
“I learnt Karate for self-defence. Usually the women don’t continue the practice of Karate. They just drop the practice after getting married or for various reasons. Karate is helpful for every woman in self-defence. As my training was hard and since I was trained to spar with men as well, it became more easy for me to tackle the opponent”, she said.
She also stated that for the upcoming Karate championship she was practising for two hours from 5 am to 7 am. And every Sunday she will be attending the classes.
