Mangaluru: A Sub Inspector and constable attached to Konaje police station have been suspended on charges of dalit atrocities.
The suspended personnel are Srikala and constable Rajesh. The two are facing charges of assaulting a dalit man named Rukmaiah.
It is said that on April 6, the police had slammed penalty on Rukamiah for selling tobacco products in his shop near Mudipu school. The SI and the constable are said to have had barged into Rukamaiah’s vegetable shop and thrown away the commodities, while hurling abuses at Rukamaiah. The policemen had also insulted Rukamiah on basis of his caste and brutally assaulted him before forcefully pushing him into the police van alleging that Rukmaiah was into drug peddling.
Rukmaiah has said that when his son Dinesh had come to the police station, the SI had threatened Dinesh of falsely implicating him in some case.
Following, this Rukamaiah was admitted to a hospital in Konaje. The police has reportedly taken in writing from Rukmaiah that he was not beaten or ill-treated at the police station.
However, Rukmaiah has filed a case against the SI and the constable and based on this complaint, the Police Commissioner has ordered suspension of the two.
