Last rites of COVID-19 victims to be performed as per their religion: DC

Mangaluru: As per the instruction of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Dakshina Kannada district Deputy Commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh has informed that funeral rites of Covid-19 victim will be performed as per their religious customs.

With locals protesting over cremation of COVID-19 victims in their areas, the DC issued a press release and informed that there is no chance of anyone getting infected from a dead body.

“Burial and cremation, both will be allowed, depending upon the religion of the deceased person,” said the DC adding that any ritual that involves touching the deadbody will not be permitted.

Even closest relatives of the deceased will not be allowed to touch, hug or bathe the dead body, said the DC.

After cremation, ash can be collected and other rites can be done, she clarified adding that precautionary measures like wearing mask and maintaining social distance is must while performing the last rites.

Meanwhile, gathering of more than 20 members for the last rites should be avoided.

Those who are working in burial ground or crematorium should wear mask and hand gloves and should clean their hands using sanitisers frequently, the press release informed.
