Last rites of DK’s first COVID-19 victim held amidst protest from locals

Mangaluru: The final rites of the 50-year-old woman, who died due to COVID-19 was held at Boloor crematorium on Sunday, April 19.

Initially, the locals at the area opposed the cremation, claiming that if the dead body is cremated at Boloor, the virus can spread and put the lives of the locals at risk.

However, they were convinced by the police and district administration.

The cremation was done under complete police security and district administration itself took the initiative of final rites.

Nobody, barring the victim’s husband and son were allowed inside the crematorium.

The lady from Bantwal was the first COVID-19 victim of Dakshina Kannada district. She was admitted to the hospital on Saturday as she had respiratory problems.

She died on Sunday even before her COVID test reports could arrive.
